A. Smith & Co. Productions is launching two divisions: A. Smith & Co. Dox, and A. Smith & Co. Entertainment.
Reality production powerhouse A. Smith & Co. Productions is launching two divisions: A. Smith & Co. Dox, a new documentary and factual programming arm; and A. Smith & Co. Entertainment, which will house the company’s wide variety of entertainment programming. A. Smith & Co. Dox is the result of the merger between A. Smith & Co. Productions and sister company BASE Productions.
Both divisions will exist under the A. Smith & Co. Productions banner, which will still be led by Arthur Smith as CEO, President Kent Weed, and COO Frank Sinton. Toby Gorman joins from FremantleMedia North America to lead A. Smith & Co. Entertainment as President, while Frank Sinton will lead Dox as President. Dox will produce shows such as the five-time NAACP Award-winning “Unsung,” “Inside the Label,” and “Sport Science.” A. Smith & Co. Entertainment will be home to broadcast stalwarts such as “Hell’s Kitchen,” and “American Ninja Warrior,” which recently won Best Competition Show at the 2016 Annual Reality TV Awards. A. Smith & Co.’s hit show “Ellen’s Design Challenge” also scooped a Reality TV Award for Best Lifestyle Show.
“With our award winning productions across both the entertainment and documentary space and continued growth in many genres, we decided to service our clients with two beefed up divisions,” said Arthur Smith, CEO of A. Smith & Co. Productions and Chairman of Tinopolis North America. “With Frank Sinton leading the charge of Dox, and Toby Gorman at the helm of Entertainment, we are well positioned to increase our production of the most compelling content possible across broadcast, cable and digital.”
A. Smith & Co. Dox includes a partnership Strong Eagle Media, producers of the hit film “Citizen Soldier,” a co-production between both companies. The two companies will continue to create documentary films together in a first-look co-production deal that spans multiple projects. A. Smith & Co. Dox will continue to produce ESPN’s Emmy Award-winning “Sport Science,” which has been renewed for an eighth season by the network. The founder of BASE Productions, John Brenkus, will remain as Executive Producer and host of “Sport Science.”
“While many people know us for our work in big broadcast formats, our factual entertainment have been award-winning, long-running top performers across a broad range of networks as well,” said Frank Sinton, COO of A. Smith & Co. Productions and President of A. Smith & Co. Dox. “We’re diving in head-first – creating a formal home for both our existing documentary programming and nonfiction films that entertain, inspire, and inform audiences worldwide.”
“A. Smith & Co. is unique in that it is isn’t limited to one genre of unscripted – from reality competition, to variety, game, sports, and documentary programming – they can do it all,” said Toby Gorman, President of A. Smith & Co. Entertainment. “I look forward to continuing the tradition of creating the hihest-quality, smash-hit programs that the company is so well-known for.”
Prior to A. Smith & Co., Toby Gorman served as the EVP of alternative programming at FremantleMedia North America (FMNA). During his tenure the company sold and launched a slate of alternative primetime programming, including “To Tell the Truth,” “Match Game,” “Celebrity Family Feud” and “Mat Franco’s Got Magic.” Prior to joining FMNA, Gorman served as Co-executive Producer and showrunner on NBC’s “Hollywood Game Night” and “The Winner Is,” and as an Executive Producer and showrunner on the NBC pilot “Surprise Surprise,” and the Fox series “Mobbed.” Gorman also served as Executive Producer of NBC’s version of “Celebrity Family Feud” in 2008 and as a supervising producer for the mega-hit “American Idol” in seasons eight and nine.
