Under Milk Wood has been selected as the UK’s official submission for next year’s Best Foreign Language Academy Award.
fFATTi fFiLMS’ Welsh language adaption of the popular Dylan Thomas play Under Milk Wood/Dan y Wenallt, has been selected as the UK’s official submission for next year’s Best Foreign Language Academy Award.
Produced by award-winning Welsh film and TV production company, fFATTi fFiLMS, the film centres on a fictional community in Wales who share their dreams via poetry and stars Rhys Ifans and Charlotte Church. It was released in Welsh cinemas last December, and the English language version Under Milk Wood, will be released on October 30.
If the film is successful in gaining an Academy Award nomination, it will be the third time a Welsh language film has ever been able to do so, with the last film Solomon a Gaenor being nominated in 2000.
Kevin Allen, creative director of fFATTi fFiLMS said: "I'm absolutely thrilled to have my film submitted as the official UK contender for a foreign language Oscar shortlist. It's a shot in the arm for both versions of our back to back Under Milk Wood productions, and I'd like to thank Bafta for selecting us."
