Pioneer goes behind the Iron Curtain in search of monsters
Pioneer Productions, one of UK’s most successful independent production companies, announces today that it has been commissioned by National Geographic Channels International and Animal Planet to produce a two-hour special, Monsters Behind the Iron Curtain (working title). The specialist factual documentary sees the company continue to build its reputation for producing innovative and diverse factual content.
Kirstie McLure, Managing Director, Pioneer Productions, says: “Everyone’s heard of the Yetis in the Himalayas and the Loch Ness Monster, but Pioneer Productions is going even further with Monsters Behind the Iron Curtain (wt). This ambitious production looks at the science behind the story with a uniquely contemporary twist, by exploring the myths and legend of a notoriously secret part of the world that is steeped in tradition; Russia and the former eastern bloc. This latest commission sees Pioneer Productions further expand its high-quality science programming portfolio and demonstrate its expertise in the field by delving deeper into unknown territory that will captivate audiences with a stylish contemporary blend of eyewitness accounts and dramatic recreation.”
Monsters Behind The Iron Curtain (wt) (1x120’) raises the Iron Curtain on the legends and myths ingrained in the former eastern bloc’s natural history. In this specialist factual documentary, Pioneer Productions investigates the region’s wildest secret legends, and explores its unknown world of weird and wonderful beasts ingrained in its popular folklore.
Using eyewitness testimony, powerful dramatic reconstruction, unique graphic-novel style illustrations and real artefacts, the programme brings to life the bizarre and frightening tales of these mythical monsters. With the help of a group of top scientists from the UK and Russia, Monsters Behind the Iron Curtain (wt) also looks into human psychology, explores the physics of the metaphysical and the biology of the beasts. From the wild men in the mountains and Romania’s Forest of Lost Souls to mutant dogs and the mysterious Mountain of Death, we discover that nothing is quite as it seems as they seek to unlock the strange truth behind the legend.
Monsters Behind the Iron Curtain (wt) was commissioned by Hannah Demidowicz for National Geographic Channels International and by Kurt Tondorf for Animal Planet. The executive producer for Pioneer is Richard Burke Ward and the director is Paul Olding.
